You know one thing for sure – you need a website for your business. You want to look professional, you want to have a place to send prospects to get to know you more (and maybe even hire you!) and you want to have your place on the inter-webs. But the question is, do you need a custom-built website for your business or should you use a website template?

Here are 3 questions you can ask yourself to find out if you should outsource your website or use a website template (like our effortless website kits!).

1. Are you JUST starting your business?

If the website you are creating is for a business that is just launching off the ground – chances are you do not need a custom-built website – unless the website IS the business (see question 3).

More likely than not, your business will go through iterations and shifts from when you first conceive it to when it is fully formed. Investing in a custom website by a designer or developer when your own vision isn’t complete will end up wasting your money and leave you with a website that is out of alignment.

However, if you’ve been in business for a while, you have a community and client base that you are ready to send to this new website – and you’re ready to take it up a notch…go for it!

2. Do you have the financial resources to invest?

Listen, getting a “custom website” for $100 is not a good idea. If you’re looking for a real website built by a quality & skilled web designer or web developer, you should be financially prepared to spend between $3,000 – $15,000 (and sometimes more!) for your vision to become a reality.

If you are not in that place yet, it’s probably not worth money to invest in a website – wait until you have an influx of cash and nice padding to make this investment.

Unpopular Opinion: A custom website is NOT going to make you money on its own. You have to have traffic to send there and you need to have a good service or product to sell.

A website template option is great because you can still have that high-quality, high-converting website, but at an affordable price that will allow you to start building that financial momentum to invest in the future. (Not all website templates are created equal of course, but our Effortless Website Kits are certainly made to convert!)

3. Is the website the business or the door to the business?

Now, this might be a little “meta” of a question – but think about it. Is the website the business itself, or is it simply a digital doorway to the business.

Here are some examples where the website IS the business:
  • Facebook
  • Dubsado
  • Asana
  • Instacart
Here are some examples where the website is the DOOR:

If the website IS the business – you probably need to hire someone to help you bring your vision to life if you don’t have the skills or means to do so.

If the website is the DOOR then think hard about questions #1 and #2 before you make your decision about whether to hire or use a website template.

So what now?

Once you figure out your answers to the above questions – you’ll know that you either need to hire a web developer / designer to bring your vision to life OR you should use a website template. Luckily, we have your next step in either situation!
